From Dark to Divine: A Master Bathroom Makeover

Many homeowners find themselves staring at an outdated bathroom, dreaming of a more luxurious and functional space. I recently helped a homeowner achieve just that by transforming their windowless, dark master bathroom into a modern, hotel-like retreat.

Standard outdated windowless master bathroom – What can we do with this?!

Key Design Elements

The goal was to create a bathroom that felt both spacious and elegant while maintaining exceptional functionality. The motto was ‘I want to feel like I’m staying at a luxurious hotel.’ To achieve this, we focused on a few key design elements:

White Oak Finishes: Warm, natural wood tones to instantly add a sense of luxury to the bathroom. White oak finishes were used for the vanity, cabinets, and trim. This helped brighten the space without making it feel too sterile while also creating a cohesive look.

There’s a built in hinged laundry hamper and spice rack turned into a bath product rack over there!

Quartz Shower: The addition of quartz slabs for the shower walls added a touch of sophistication. The movement of the flowing veins also helped create a sense of depth and dimension. The reflective surface bounced light around the space, making it feel larger.

Beautiful subtle flowing veins creates slight contrast without being too stark

Quartz Countertop and Backsplash: The backsplash went up to the ceiling further enhancing the luxurious feel of the bathroom and providing a practical surface for everyday use.

Remember to play with mirrors and lighting to create the optical illusion of a larger and brighter space

Increased Lighting: The bathroom was poorly lit and additional lighting was needed. By adding more canned lights and front and backlit LED bathroom mirrors, we were able to create a bright and inviting space that felt much larger than its actual size.

Larger Shower with Quartz Border Enclosure: To create a truly luxurious shower experience, we increased the size of the shower by 60%, from a standard 5 ft x 3 ft shower to a 6 ft x 4 ft shower. The addition of quartz surrounding the shower enclosure further enhanced the spa-like atmosphere.

Low Iron Glass: The shower glass was made out of low iron glass. This is a type of glass that has a significantly reduced amount of iron oxide compared to traditional float glass. Iron oxide is a common impurity in glass that can give it a greenish tint. By minimizing the iron content, low-iron glass becomes much clearer and more transparent. The white quartz truly shone due to the superior clarity of the low iron glass.

Custom Storage solutions: Built in laundry hamper, drawers and pull out product rack and shower niche behind the shower pony wall so bath products are hidden out of view.

Took this photo before the beautiful oval crystal knobs were added. But there is a drawer over a laundry hamper and a product ‘spice’ rack on the right.
I love this shower niche behind the pony wall. It’s hidden out of view so you don’t see your products when you’re in the bathroom and only see them when you’re in the shower

Hardware with Clean Lines and Luxurious Details: We selected the Graff brand Vignola shower series in Olive Bronze finish due to the warm chocolate and golden hues. We also selected sparkly crystal glass knobs in a champagne gold finish to add a sense of modern elegance to further reflect the beautiful lighting in the bathroom.

I love the golden champagne reflection of these oval shaped crystal knobs! They feel so good too!

Flooring: We used the same tile on the shower floor but in a different shape to keep the eye moving forward and the floor looking seamless. Large format tile obviously uses less grout lines but is also more minimalistic and modern feeling.

Paint: Walls, trim and ceiling were all painted the no fail slightest hint of warmth BM Simply White using Benjamin Moore Aura Bath & Spa – a luxurious matte finish designed for high-humidity environments. Learn more about selecting the perfect white paint.

Custom Sliding Barn Door with inset mirror: For additional privacy from the master bedroom, we created a custom sliding door with an full length inset mirror.

The Results

The transformation was a true Cinderella story. The once dark and outdated bathroom now feels spacious, luxurious, and inviting. The combination of custom white oak finishes and built-ins, quartz, and improved lighting, along with the larger shower and storage capabilities created a bathroom that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
