Restaurant style tender beefy goodness without the grease or MSG
This quick and easy meal is one of our family staples. We used to buy the Trader Joe’s Broccoli Beef but now do this instead which makes 3x the amount and is just as tasty. It’s in the easy category not only because cooking is a breeze, but also because the prep and cleanup is so fast. Try using bagged frozen microwavable broccoli, powdered garlic and ginger to make this even easier – I really don’t like chopping.
Ingredients
- Steak cut into thin 1 inch slices – We buy Costco premium steak in bulk, cut into strips for stir fry and freeze into individual ziplock bags
- Bag of microwaveable broccoli – I use Kirkland organic – it tastes the most like fresh broccoli vs other brands that make the broccoli taste rubbery
Sauce and marinade – Make one batch each for marinade and sauce.
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 3 tbl brown sugar – I use coconut sugar (low glycemic) – Add more if you like a sweeter taste
- 2 tbl corn starch or use thickening agent of your choice
- 1 tbl chinese cooking wine – Shaoxing wine or Japanese rice wine
- 1 tsp Garlic powder
- 1 tsp Ginger powder
- White pepper to taste
Oil – Any high heat oil – I use grapeseed
Beef broth (optional) for de-glazing but makes it more flavorful
Directions
- Marinate steak for however long you can even if it’s 5 min. Ideally you can marinate for a few hours.
- Once ready, add oil to wok and heat.
- Begin searing steak in single layer in wok and in batches if needed. At the same time, microwave broccoli.
- Remove steak once it’s too your liking. I prefer medium because it will have additional cooking time later.
- Once beef is removed from wok, de-glaze wok with water or beef broth.
- Add sauce and let bubble and thicken.
- Add broccoli and beef and let simmer until thickened.
The sauce and marinade makes the beef tender and the searing of the steak gives it a nice brown beefy char and flavor.
